Our 10 favorite reads aboard S/V Wanderlust include a couple sailing memoirs, some practical knowledge, and a few non-sailing but thought provoking books to get your heart-a-beatin' and wheels-a-churnin'.
Love with a Chance of Drowning, Torre DeRoche
Funny, true, romantic, tear jerker, a good insight into what living aboard with your partner is really like!
The Long Way, Bernard Moitessier
An inspiring tale of a single hander sailing his boat, Joshua, around the world.
A Gentlemen’s Guide to Passages South 10th Edition, Bruce Van Sant:
This is the guide we're following aboard S/V Wanderlust to the Western Caribbean. It includes tips, routes, anchorages, and good advice on everything from conch recipes to reading weather.
The Cruiser’s Handbook of Fishing, Scott Bannerot
Wonderful tips on identifying your catch, lobstering and diving, deep sea fishing, cleaning your catch, gear, and recipes too!
Don Casey’s Complete Illustrated Sailboat Maintenance Manual, Don Casey
A MUST for any live aboard! Remember, when you move aboard, you become your own mechanic, plumber, electrician and captain. :) This has come in handy more times than we can count.
The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo
A book that will help you embrace and love minimalism! This book was huge in helping us during the downsizing process and deciding which items would help us support our dream.
Leap of Faith: Quit Your Job and Live on a Boat, Ed Robinson
Good practical advice and how-to information about starting your live-aboard life.
The Four Hour Workweek, Tim Ferris
Tim Ferris has a lot of life advice in this book, and some of it is totally bogus. But the main ideas (less work, more living and traveling) resonate clearly with wanderlusters and can be put to good use.
Ishmael, Daniel Quinn
Not sailing related, this book deals with the natural world and our environment. It is thought provoking and an interesting read for any sailor who plans to spend time connecting with nature.
The Untethered Soul, the Journey Beyond Yourself, Michael A Singer
A philosophical read that will get your brain churning about all the questions of life! It touches on how to prioritize our lives, not feel guilty when we do things for the sole purpose of happiness, and understand our life's ups and downs.
Thanks for reading,
Ben, Quinn and Ruca
